One Month After Sleeping With My Ex-Wife, a Hospital Called Me—Then I Learned the Truth She Had Been Hiding

Exactly thirty minutes after hanging up the phone, I was on my way to the airport.

I didn’t even remember locking my office.

All I could think about was Sarah.

The nurse hadn’t explained much over the phone. She only repeated that Sarah had been admitted to the hospital the night before and that my name was listed as her emergency contact.

That made no sense.

We’d been divorced for three years.

Why hadn’t she listed a family member? A friend? Anyone else?

During the entire flight to Miami, my mind replayed that night in the hotel over and over again.

The red stain.

Her frightened expression.

The way she’d practically begged me not to ask questions.

By the time I arrived at the hospital, I barely felt my legs.

A nurse led me through several hallways before stopping outside a private room.

“She’s awake,” she said softly. “But she’s been asking for you.”

I slowly pushed the door open.

Sarah looked different.

She was pale.

Much thinner than I remembered.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes, and she managed only a faint smile when she saw me.

“You actually came,” she whispered.

“What happened?” I asked.

“You disappeared after Miami.”

“I didn’t disappear,” I replied. “You ignored every message I sent.”

She closed her eyes.

“I know.”

For several seconds neither of us spoke.

Then she reached toward the bedside table and handed me a thick medical folder.

“I wanted to tell you that night,” she said quietly.

“I just couldn’t.”

I opened the folder.

The first page contained scan results.

The second listed medications.

Then my eyes stopped on one sentence.

Diagnosis: Stage II cervical cancer.

My hands began shaking.

I looked back at her.

“The blood…” I whispered.

She nodded.

“It wasn’t what you thought.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I found out two months before you came to Miami.”

“I had already started testing and treatment.”

“I didn’t know if it was going to get worse.”

“I didn’t want your pity.”

I couldn’t say a word.

Everything I’d imagined over the past month suddenly collapsed.

She hadn’t been hiding an affair.

She hadn’t been lying to manipulate me.

She’d been trying to protect me from something she believed she had to face alone.

“I thought if you knew,” she continued, “you’d stay because you felt responsible.”

“I didn’t want that.”

“So I pushed you away.”

I sat beside her bed without saying anything.

Finally, I asked the question that had haunted me since receiving the call.

“Why am I your emergency contact?”

Sarah gave a sad smile.

“Because after everything… you’re still the only person I trust when things fall apart.”

Before I could answer, someone knocked gently on the door.

A doctor stepped inside carrying another file.

“Mr. Miller?”

“Yes.”

“We’ve completed Mrs. Sanders’ latest scans.”

He looked from Sarah to me before continuing.

“There are some results we’d like to discuss with both of you.”

The expression on his face told me everything.

Whatever he was about to say…

…was going to change both of our lives again.
