Headlights too bright? Why are more and more drivers struggling to see the road?

What feels like your eyesight suddenly failing at night may actually be the result of several factors working together. Modern LED headlights are much brighter than older halogen bulbs, and their cooler, blue-tinted light tends to scatter more intensely through rain, fog, and wet roads. That scattering reduces contrast and can turn oncoming headlights into a harsh wall of glare. Taller SUVs and trucks can make the problem worse because their headlights sit higher, often shining directly toward eye level—especially when the vehicle is carrying a heavy load or its beams are poorly aligned.

The good news is that you can reduce the impact. Having your headlights professionally aligned, adjusting them when carrying heavy cargo, and keeping both sides of your windshield clean can make a noticeable difference. When facing oncoming traffic at night, try shifting your focus slightly toward the right edge of your lane rather than looking directly into the headlights. This helps reduce eye strain while keeping you oriented on the road. As adaptive and self-leveling lighting systems become more widespread, night driving doesn’t have to mean fighting constant glare. With the right technology and a few simple habits, the road can become clearer, calmer, and safer.
